Safety-Sensitive Employers: FMRT Provides Short-Term Counseling for Employees

The FMRT Group is honored to support your department with our psychological and medical evaluation services. It is because of our relationships with you through the past 11 years, and the trust we have built, that we are often asked to assist you and your employees with short-term counseling services.
Our experienced psychologists offer safety-sensitive-focused, short-term counseling for public safety professionals when they experience work-related problems that go beyond the scope of EAP or when an employee would prefer to speak with a culturally-sensitive psychologist.
Unlike The FMRT Group’s pre- and post-hire evaluations, our psychologists do establish doctor-patient confidentiality surrounding short-term counseling. Therefore, employers will not be provided with any documentation other than attendance, along with a billing statement. It is important to remember that the FMRT psychologist will not provide a diagnosis or recommendations as to suitability or fitness of an employee upon completion of counseling.
Because of the number of diverse clinical professionals on our staff, we can provide FMRT psychologists for short-term counseling without duplicating their roles as post-hire evaluators. This means if a Fitness for Duty evaluation becomes necessary, we will assign a different FMRT psychologist to evaluate your employee. To initiate short-term counseling:
• The appropriate person from your department will contact The FMRT Group ( to discuss the process
• The interested employee will follow up to schedule their first of five sessions
• After the first session, the employee and FMRT psychologist will coordinate the remaining four sessions
• If the psychologist or employee determine that more than five sessions are needed, the employee will request additional sessions from the employer and employer will send documented approval to FMRT(

Unfortunately, we do not accept any form of insurance or workers’ compensation. We ask that a specific line item be created within your organization so these services can be offered to your staff throughout their careers.

Short-term counseling is an important way to support and sustain your public safety personnel. This approach focuses on helping a person resolve or manage a targeted problem. It has specific goals and when the identified symptoms resolve, the sessions end.
As a leader in your public safety organization, you are well aware of the importance of providing support for the emotional well-being of the people who work for you. Your employees are your most valuable, and your most vulnerable, assets. Even the strongest, smartest, calmest, and most resilient are susceptible to negative impacts of the profession. Working with experienced psychologists who are steeped in the public safety culture and who understand the stressors and expectations of the profession will be another way to keep your personnel healthy and successful.
Confidential short-term counseling
Research has shown that psychological support works, and it works best when it is adapted to the client and the client’s culture. The short-term counseling services offered by The FMRT Group are specifically tailored for the fields of public safety and our extensive familiarity with the particular nuances of these professions is beneficial to the sworn and non-sworn professionals who serve our communities.
The guarantee of confidentiality adds a level of confidence for the employee. He or she can be assured that whatever problem, challenge, or life event is being addressed will be kept private. And, identified solutions, management techniques, or methods of coping will remain a personal choice and not become part of a personnel record.

Anyone throughout your organization could require some short-term assistance in handling life’s tough problems at some time during their career.
There are the demands on one’s body of long hours and multiple shifts that take a toll on sleep quality and physical health. There are the mental stressors of community hostility or lack of family support. There are the emotional impacts of repeated exposure to violence and trauma. The long-term cumulative effects of public safety professions can result in anyone reaching a stumbling block that needs a little help overcoming before things result in performance issues and/or a Fitness for Duty Evaluation.

To Our Safety Officers Across The State: Thank You, Thank You, Thank You

The FMRT Group is always proud of the men and women who have dedicated their lives to guarding the safety of our North Carolina citizens. But recently, we have been especially awed by the many accounts of public safety personnel across the state who put their own well-being aside to offer pre-storm evacuation assistance and post-storm rescue aid to those affected by Hurricane Matthew.

We are amazed and touched by the many accounts of heroic efforts and compassionate actions and just all-around outstanding community service that we continue to hear. All of our medical and psychological clinicians and support staff in all seven locations want to say a heart-felt “Thank You” to every one of you. It was a most difficult job very well done.

Durham Woman Grateful for PD Expertise

Dione Cofield of Durham is grateful to a local police officer for saving her life after she went into cardiac arrest in her parked car. While her sister Stephanie Booth was calling police, Officer Franciso DeVera, who was patrolling the area, arrived and immediately performed CPR.

Officer DeVera said, “I’ve never done CPR before. We train for CPR when you get hired here. I’ve trained for CPR in the military, but I’ve never used it before. It’s one of those things where you train, and you train, and you train, and you don’t know when you’re going to have to use it.”

Dione knows if it wasn’t for Officer DeVera, she wouldn’t be here today, but he won’t let her call him a hero. “I was just doing my job,” he said.

Staff Focus: Rachel Beauchamp, RN Medical Services Manager

achel Beauchamp supports our medical clinicians and processes at all FMRT locations, while overseeing collection and posting of job applicant or employee medical documentation for client agencies. She visits each location quarterly to ensure that processes are efficiently producing accurate medical assessments and fair suitability determinations. Her goal is to see that FMRT mid-levels are supported and to ensure that everyone receives a competent, thorough, and fair medical assessment. She also makes certain that professional reports are submitted to FMRT’s client agencies in a timely manner while maintaining good communication with agencies when records are pending.

“I like knowing that my job impacts, and hopefully improves, North Carolina communities,” Rachel says. “I respect the public safety profession and realize the importance of careful consideration of each applicant and employee.”

Outside of work, she enjoys reading, cooking, movies, outdoor activities, and snuggling with her dog, Buddy. Rachel also loves spending time with friends and family, including her mother and stepfather; her sister, brother-in-law, and their two sons; and her two children LilyAnn, 12, and Bennett, 10. In addition to all that, currently she is enrolled in graduate school.

A Word from Dr. Warren

Focused, short term counseling is one helpful tool to address “normal” work, family, or related problems. It is particularly useful in an occupational health setting when there is quick problem identification and mutual goal-directedness by the counselor and client, and when the professional relationship is recognized as being a finite, three-to-ten sessions. It has long been my practice to commend client employers for being strong enough and perceptive enough to take advantage of short term counseling.
